The Request for Proposal is available as a downloadable document on this page. Media Promotes East End Street Fest

Ninfa’s on Navigation was the site of the East End Street Fest press conference on April 5.Metro, the Dynamo, the Houston East End Chamber of Commerce, and Houston Rotary joined GEEMD to talk with Houston’s media. Diane Schenke, GEEMD president, Chris Canetti of the Houston Dynamo, George Greanias of Metro, Rick Garcia of Houston Rotary, Francis Dyess, Houston East End Chamber and Houston City Council Member Melissa Noriega were on hand to invite the city to the East End Street Fest on May 5, 2012. The festival is free and open to the public, from 12 noon to 8 pm at 4500 Harrisburg Boulevard. In addition to a Kid’s Zone, music, dance, art cars, and the Milby High School carnival, the festival will feature a best taco contest and best decorated taco truck contest.

A New East End Mural

Congratulations to artist Jesse Sifuentes and Eastwood Academy students for a spectacular new East End mural.

At a public dedication on April 11, Council Member James Rodriguez thanked Jesse Sifuentes, Eastwood Academy students and faculty, and the Clorox Company for their contribution to East End public art. The Clorox Company provided funds for the mural through a grant that links art and public education, enabling local students to participate in creating public art. This mural is the third in a series of tile murals at 6635 Harrisburg Boulevard, where Mr. Harry Simon’s long- standing retail store, Simon Menswear, has been in business for several generations. Thank you to Mr. Simon for allowing the public to enjoy these wonderful murals!

Vote for Livable Centers Public Art

We’re looking for community input on the public art concepts designed for Sampson and York streets. The $5 million ARRA grant awarded to GEEMD for pedestrian access improvements requires that the District spend 3-5% of grant funds on public art. Here are concept designs for benches, bus shelters, bike racks and trash receptacles, which would serve as functional art pieces on these two streets. (“Concept” means that the phrases and colors may change.) Please participate in our survey and let us know what you think.
