Metro Announces Small Vehicle Service

METRO is committed to providing the right vehicle for the right community and is introducing a new, smaller, 27-foot bus tailored to meet the dynamic needs of patrons on 13 routes.The new buses have all the amenities of METRO’s 40-foot vehicles with header signs, interior pull cords, and audio/visual announcements. They are ADA accessible and seat 15 passengers. And, best of all the cost is $1.25 with a three hour transfer.The new service underlines METRO’s commitment to communities, plus it connects with other service, including METRORail. METRO will showcase the new 426 Swiftline bus service Tuesday, March 12, from 3 – 5 PM at its Southeast Transit Center (6000 Scottcrest). The public will have a chance to see the vehicle at the Southeast location Tuesday and on Wednesday and Thursday vehicles will debut at:

37 El Sol Crosstown Magnolia Transit Ctr. (6948 Harrisburg) Wed., March 13, 11 AM – 1 PM

64 Lincoln City Circulator Acres Homes Transit Ctr. (1220 W. Little York) Thurs, March 14, 3 – 5 PM

You’ll see the new buses on the streets on 13 routes: 37 El Sol Crosstown, 38 Manchester, 64 Lincoln City Circulator, 352 Swingle, 426 Swiftline, 6 Jensen, 9 North Main/Gulfton, 18 Kirby, 42 Holman Crosstown, 58 Hammerly,78 Alabama/Irvington, 83 Lee Road and 98 Briargate.

Access for All Certification

The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation has issued a certification to GEEMD for substantial compliance with the Texas Architectural Barriers Act for pedestrian improvements on Harrisburg Boulevard. These include the ramps and landings that were constructed by GEEMD to meet ADA accessibility requirements by the Texas Government Code, Chapter 469.

Thank you to all of our 225 volunteers, sponsors, and supporting agencies for a spectacular tree planting event on Broadway St. on February 9, 2013! Trees for Houston provided the 400 native and flowering trees and shrubs for this important East End gateway and transit corridor. Houston Parks and Recreation Department and Keep Houston Beautiful helped coordinate the volunteers and equipment. Our sponsors and volunteer agencies included Frost Bank, Whataburger, Maximus Coffee, SER Jobs for Progress, Solvay, Centerpoint Energy and the Wharton Dual Language Academy, University of Houston Academic Achievers, YES Prep, Houston Country Club Place, Community Family Centers, AAMA Casa Phoenix, and more!

East End Hike and Bike Trails

Trails will be upgraded with $1.5 million in funding from Harris County Precinct 2with 8-10 foot concrete paths, wayfinding signage, and better connectivity for both cyclists and pedestrians to other modes of transportation, including the new light rail line on Harrisburg, and to schools, workplaces, and parks. Additionally, TIGER IV grant funds of $6.1 million will improve and add sidewalks and dual-use paths to many more East End streets, along with pedestrian lighting and street furniture. The map shows additions and improvements to the hike and bike trail; construction should last 4 to 6 months starting in Spring 2013.

Navigation Construction Update

The next construction update meeting is scheduled for Friday, May 24, 2013, at Crespo Funeral Home at 2516 Navigation Boulevard at 2:00 p.m.
