New Hope Housing

New Hope Housing’s core purpose is to create life-stabilizing affordable apartment homes with a sense of dignity for adults who live singly on low incomes (~$1,300 per month). New Hope addresses the single room occupancy (SRO) housing crisis in Houston by providing a practical and demonstrated solution to prevent homelessness. As the leading provider of permanent, supportive SRO housing, New Hope fosters a safe and nurturing environment for men and women who would otherwise be homeless or living in severely substandard conditions. Since 1993, the organization has served veterans, the elderly, the chronically ill, students, people with cognitive and physical impairments, those overcoming substance abuse, the working poor, and the formerly homeless.

New Hope’s Board of Directors is committed to developing and operating 1,000 units of SRO housing by 2015. As a non-profit supportive housing developer with the efficiency of the private sector, New Hope is the only affordable housing developer with an assertive, concrete plan to increase Houston’s supportive, permanent SRO housing stock.

SRO Communities in the East End Management District:

The Canal Street Apartment complex is located at 2821 Canal, one block east of the Original Ninfa’s in the Second Ward. This 133-unit SRO community features a side courtyard from which residents can view a community mural, Ventanas de Oportunidad, sponsored by the Greater East End Management District.

New Hope Housing was honored to partner with the Management District during the creation of the community mural. A palapa for mural watch parties was located on its land, prior to construction of the Canal Street Apartments. “We greatly enjoyed hosting the four mural watch parties and the final ribbon cutting ceremony for this important community asset,” said New Hope Executive Director, Joy Horak-Brown.

“The Canal development marks the culmination of years of hard work by the NHH-Canal board, together with neighborhood leaders, to fund and build a remarkable addition to the East End,” said board president, Michael M. Fowler. “We’re excited to be a part of the revitalization of the neighborhood and thank the Greater East End Management District for its leadership,” he concluded.

New Hope Housing at Brays Crossing, a 149-unit apartment community, opened in early 2010, and is currently leasing. This is a deep renovation of a former public nuisance property, HouTex Inn, located at I-45 and Griggs Road.

An important public art display is an integral feature to the Brays Crossing property as a part of the continuous sound wall facing the freeway. Chicana artist, Carmen Lomas Garza, designed a four-panel galvanized steel mural based on colorful Mexican paper cutouts. New Hope is also the proud recipient of the 2005 East End Amigo Award, extended to a business that has made a significant contribution to the East End.
